Main Library Extension and Refurbishment
Construction is underway on a three-storey Annex to the Main Library as part of a major project to extend and refurbish the existing Library. This will create a next generation library and learning space that will offer diverse learning experiences where printed and digital information are combined in an environment that is user focused, service oriented and technology rich. Students will be able to work collaboratively in spaces that support contemporary social and learning patterns.
Phases
The project involves two phases Phase 1 covers the construction of the Annex and Phase 2 involves the refurbishment of Level 2 of the existing Library, the construction of a new stairway and an additional mezzanine on Level 4. These changes will create a new visual impression of the three levels of the Library as the stairway to the two upper levels will be fully visible as one enters and passes through the lower level.
At the end of Phase 1, expected to be around March 2009, services and facilities will temporarily be relocated to Level 3 of the new Annex until the conclusion of Phase 2 around August 2009.
The Annex
The Annex has been designed in such a way that the facades blend in with existing buildings and environmentally sustainable design (ESD) initiatives have been applied throughout. This includes:
- High performance glass
- Sun shading to South East and North West façades
- All external walls and roofing is to be insulated
These elements will help to reduce the internal heat loads, thus reducing the amount of energy required to run the mechanical air-conditioning within the building. The annex component of the building will be compliant with B.C.A sections for energy efficiency
The new Annex will enable the co-location of all staff responsible for a range of library, computing, audiovisual and voice communications services to Bond students and staff. These staff will be located on Level 2 of the Annex and services will be provided via a new integrated Service Desk in the refurbished part of the existing Library.
Other Information Services staff will be housed on Level 4 of the Annex while Level 3 will accommodate Teaching & Learning Services, including the English Help Centre and two new large teaching spaces. Both levels 3 and 4 will be accessible from the Academic Spine via a new external staircase and a lift.
Floor Plans:
The refurbished Level 2
A Coffee Shop in the Library! Students and staff will be able to get their caffeine fixes on their way into the Library with a new servery located near the entrance. The area will be fitted with comfortable chairs and tables where social learning can take place in a relaxed and informal atmosphere.
The new-look Level 2 will feature the new fully integrated Service Desk for all library, computing, audiovisual and voice communications information and support as well as the following:
- 3 study booths similar to those in the Multimedia Learning Centre, fitted with appropriate technology to facilitate group work around large LCD screens
- 2 diner-style discussion booths for groups to work collaboratively without technology
- 2 large group study rooms each fitted with projection facilities and a laptop that can be borrowed from the Service Desk – each room can seat up to 12 students
- An improved printing and photocopying area featuring 4 express printing stations for quick printing of assignments
- Consultation booths for students to consult staff on library or computing matters
- Consultation rooms for Liaison Librarians to provide extended reference services to students
- A range of open tables with easily accessible power points provided for laptop users
- Tables fitted with desktop computers that allow for individual work and working in pairs
- A special needs workstation with adjustable accessibility desk for students with disabilities
Along the southern and eastern windows, 20 individual workstations will be arranged in such a way as to allow for alternate spaces for laptop users, enabling students to work in pairs where one uses the desktop and the other a laptop.
The refurbished Level 3 Mezzanine and new Level 4 Mezzanine
The current stairway from level 2 to level 3 will be dismantled and replaced with a less obtrusive stairway that will take up less space and will lead up to a smaller refurbished mezzanine on level 3. This area will house a newspaper display stand including older copies of newspapers as well as comfortable seating with power-enabled coffee tables for laptop use.
The back part of the current mezzanine will incorporate the new stairway to a small mezzanine on Level 4 with bench seating and tables for social and informal learning.
The campus community will be kept informed of progress and it is expected that there will be minimal disruption to services during both construction phases.
