Information about Filters

A filter is a file that instructs EndNote how to interpret data from another source. It ensures that the information from a database or library catalogue is placed in the correct fields..

Because each database offered by the various information providers has its own way to organize data, you will need to choose the correct filter for each database.

Endnote contains a large number of filters in the "Filters Folder". The Library has provided additional filters that are not contained in this folder. Other filters can be obtained from the Endnote Filters site

Macintosh users will need to convert the files to a format recognizable by Macs. Please consult your Liaison Librarian for advice.

Information about Connection Files

The Connect command in EndNote lets you connect directly to online bibliographic databases or catalogues, search for the references that you need, and retrieve those references without leaving EndNote.

Endnote contains a large number of Connection files in the "Connections Folder". Only the following connection files are available at Bond: Bond University Library, PubMed, and Web of Science.

You must insert the Connect files in the correct folder where your copy of EndNote has been installed. Typically this will be C:\Program Files\EndNote\Connect\.... If you do not insert the Connect file correctly you will not be able to access it from the Connection Manager when using EndNote

Each Informit database has a different record structure. If you wish to import records into your EndNote library, you must search one database at a time. If you select multiple databases to search simultaneously, you will not be able to import your results into EndNote.Check the records which you wish to download. Note that a maximum of 50 records can be downloaded at one time. We strongly recommend that you save your marked records frequently because the Informit system has a tendency to clear the marked records without warning.

- Click on Save and a new screen will be displayed.
- Under Records to Save, the option Marked Records should be checked.
- We suggest that you uncheck the option Clear marked records after Save. Wait until you have saved your records and checked that the correct records have been saved before clearing the marked records.
- Under Label Format, the option Short Labels should be selected.
- Under Fields to Save, select Complete Record.
- Under Extra Options, you can uncheck the option Save Search History.
- Under Output Format, select Plain Text. Do not select the EndNote option if our filters page lists a filter for the database which you are searching. If there is no specific filter, then select EndNote.
- Now click on the Save Records button.
- Save the file as a Text Document (*.txt).
- Go to our filters page and download the filter which corresponds to the database which you have been searching. See the notes on that page about where to save the filter.
- Open EndNote and import the file of saved records using the filter.
- If there is no filter for the database on our filters page, then download the records in the EndNote output format. Make sure that you save them as a text document (*.txt). To import this file into EndNote, select EndNote Import as your Import Option. The records will require considerable editing after import.
