• introduces students to the real depth of questions which may arise in the course of their attempt to come to an understanding of their world
• promotes an understanding of research and research methods, and encourages scepticism over packaged knowledge and solutions
• encourages students to question knowledge in the disciplines and discuss competing perspectives in the field of study
• includes attendance at faculty seminars and workshops
• provides students the opportunity to collaborate with other students and with academics on research projects
