Bond students create Christmas cheer for special needs children

19 December 2012

Bond University students brought smiles to the faces of 25 special-needs children in the lead up to Christmas at the annual Bond University Sony Foundation Children’s Holiday Camp.

The four-day holiday camp, an intensive program where the children live on campus from December 17 to December 20, see volunteering Bond students take responsibility for the children’s well-being as well as organising activities and supervising games.

Bond Sony Foundation Children’s Holiday Camp Co-convenor Kristy Merganovski said the camp provided an opportunity for students to give the children a fun and entertaining experience while providing the children’s parents and carers with some much needed respite.

“This year’s camp had an exciting program, topped off by a visit from Santa at a special Christmas Party on Thursday,” said Ms Merganovski.

“The interest has grown remarkably since the initial camp five years ago and we are really proud of the Bondies wanting to give to the wider community.”

The children are kept entertained with a jam-packed program of sport, theatre, adventure and games.

“This year’s exciting program includes a trip to Sea World, a scavenger hunt with Bondy bear and sailing on Lake Orr,” said Ms Merganovski.

This is the fifth year Bond University has participated in the Sony Foundation Children’s Holiday Camp Program. Sony Foundation has been running the program since 1999 and now funds 22 camps across the country.

The support team consists of all student volunteers and three nurses who have traveled from Victoria and New Zealand to give their time to the fantastic cause.
