Professor Marcus Breen joins Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences

Professor Marcus Breen has been appointed as the new Head of School of Communications and Media at Bond University.

Professor Breen joins the Faculty from the United States of America where he was most recently Associate Professor of Communication Studies at Northeastern University in Boston.

With wide ranging experience as a consultant for government and the telecommunications industry Professor Breen’s vision for the School is to create work-ready graduates equipped for roles in industries including journalism, public relations, advertising, computer games and film & television.

“I am really enjoying my time settling into  Bond University.  It is beautiful campus and a great team.  There is a wealth of experience amongst the academics and they are all dedicated to providing the best experience for our students,” said Professor Breen.

“The School has alumni working for a range of communication and media identities from journalism graduates at the ABC, to film & television students working on million dollar films in Los Angeles. It’s a really exciting time to be part of the School and I look forward to maintaining this reputation.”

Bond University Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Professor Raoul Mortley officially welcomed Marcus Breen to the Faculty noting his experience.

“I am delighted to welcome Professor Marcus Breen to the positions of Professor in the Faculty, and Head of School of Communication and Media,” he said.

“Professor Breen returns to Australia with a wealth of experience including a substantial list of publications in esteemed journals, and three books most notably including Uprising: the Internet’s Unintended Consequences, released this past May.”

Professor Breen’s academic experience includes positions at RMIT and Melbourne University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA.

Professor Breen holds a Bachelor of Human Movement Studies from the University of Queensland, as well as a Bachelor of Arts, with a focus on journalism, history and sociology, a Bachelor of Letters from the Australian National University in History, and a PhD from Victoria University in Melbourne, with a thesis on the music industry.

His teaching at Bond University this semester will include Mass Media and Sociology of Mass Communication.
