The Globalisation and Development Centre


The GDC is an inter-disciplinary Faculty Research Centre established in 2007.  It aims to encourage collaboration and to promote high quality and innovative research within the broad field of globalisation.  There is a research focus on the Asia-Pacific region as well as issues dealing with the economic development within the Asia-Pacific.

One broad emphasis is the impact of globalisation on financial and labour markets.  From a socio-cultural perspective, globalisation has also raised interesting issues with regard to sustainable development, identity, the quality of life and deterritorialisation.

It is, therefore, imperative to study the implications of globalisation for the cultural identity, quality of life and sense of being on people impacted by globalisation. A systematic study of these and other vital issues constitutes the agenda of the GDC.  More specifically, the GDC has the following objectives:

  • Contribute to research in the globalisation area through publications, conference presentations, seminars and workshops involving academics, leading scholars, as well as participants from the public sector, non-governmental organisations and the private sector.
  • To establish a network of academics and researchers who have made significant contributions in the area of globalisation and its economic impacts as well as on related issues such as political economy, international business, culture, economic development and environmental sustainability.
  • To promote and further research activities of junior researchers interested in globalisation.
