BACKGROUND
Consumption of a 40% calorie-restricted diet (CR) is known to protect against many aging related diseases including cancer and neurodegeneration. We are currently investigating the effects of CR on the neuroanatomy and function of the enteric nervous system.
AIMS OF THE PROJECT
This study will build on current research outcomes to further investigate the effects of CR on motility and water and electrolyte secretion using isolated intestinal segments from animals, and elucidate mechanisms responsible for the effects of CR. Results obtained will suggest potential therapies for the treatment of age-related gastrointestinal disorders.
METHODS
This project will combine isolated tissue bath studies with immunohistochemistry and fluoresence microscopy.
