EFFECTS OF MAGNETIC STIMULATION ON MOTOR OUTPUT IN HUMANS

Supervisor

Professor Bulent Turman
Professor of Physiology

BACKGROUND

Direct controlled activation of the human brain has been achieved with the introduction of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) technique. The human motor cortex can be directly activated by means of this non-invasive method and the output of the cortex can be measured by recording EMG responses from relevant muscles. Recent magnetic stimulators are capable of delivering repetitive magnetic pulses to evoke prolonged and more prominent effects in the brain.

AIMS OF THE PROJECT

The aim of this project is to investigate in healthy humans the effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimuli on the excitability of motor cortex.

METHODS

The motor cortex output in response to magnetic shocks will be assessed by recording averaged muscle evoked potentials (MEPs) from hand muscles via surface electrodes and by measuring the grip strengths. The effects of various repetitive magnetic stimulation protocols will be assessed.
