Daniel

Associate Professor of Urban Planning

Hello, my name is Daniel O'Hare and I'm an Associate Professor of Urban Planning here at Bond University. Bond is one of only a very small number of universities worldwide to offer an undergraduate degree that combines Urban Design with Planning.

I am a very keen advocate of walkable cities and effective public transport. Most days I ride my bike to Bond from Robina Railway Station. I try to live the sustainable urban lifestyle that I'd like to see more readily available to most urban dwellers.

MA Urban Design, Oxford Brookes University
PhD Urban Design, Oxford Brookes University

mY cAREER sO fAR: Following my Town Planning degree at UNSW, I practised as an Urban Planner for five years in Sydney and regional New South Wales. In my work as a local government planner at Lismore and Mosman, and in Urban Conservation planning at the National Trust of Australia (NSW), I enjoyed working in multidisciplinary teams with strong connections to the community. After my coursework Masters and from early in my doctoral research, I was Senior Lecturer in Urban Design at Queensland University of Technology for 14 years, coordinating the Postgraduate Urban Design Program. My main area of research investigates how coastal communities make their urban design and development decisions, and I have published extensively on my research involving Australian and international case studies. I am also very interested in researching and teaching relating to the creation of walkable, public transport supportive urban places.

WHY I CHOSE BOND: I was very keen to be part of a new School educating a critical selection of the professions responsible for producing more sustainable urban places. Now that more than half the world's population is living in urban areas, it is clear that global sustainability depends on delivering sustainable cities. Bond University is located in one of Australia's fastest growing regions, in a city that has been the focus of much of my research, so the decision to join Bond was very easy. The small size of Bond was an added plus. There is so much less bureaucracy, and the friendly environment is attractive to both students and staff.
