Sheila MananghayaBachelor of Property & Sustainable DevelopmentGold Coast, QLDWhat is your ultimate ambition in life? To make my mark in the Sustainable Development industry – I’d love to work on iconic projects that are known around the world. How are Bond’s world-class professors helping you get there? Studying at Bond has exceeded all my expectations. The classes are so small so you really get to know all your professors and you never feel awkward about asking questions. The other really impressive thing about our lecturers is that they actually all work in some area of property development – they’re not just academics teaching a whole lot of theory; they really know how it applies on the site. The Faculty’s Industry Placement Officer organised work experience for me at Hutchinson Builders. I worked with them one day a week for a semester, but I’ve kept in contact with them since then - they’ve even helped me while researching some of my uni assignments. How is the international network of contacts you’re gaining at Bond helping bring your ambition to life? There are so many ways to build up your contacts at Bond. I joined the Sustainable Development Students Association – I’m actually President at the moment – and I’ve met heaps of industry people through organising events. I’m also Promotions Director for the Bond Investment Group and we run a lot of seminars about investment, as well as networking functions, which involve business leaders and high flyers. I’m also Bond University’s representative for the Urban Development Institute of Australia’s Gold Coast branch, writing Bond University updates for their monthly newsletter so that puts me in touch with all of the key people in the local industry. Oh yes – and the CDC has been amazing too! That’s the Career Development Centre here on campus. They’ve run seminars especially for the Property Development students and are in touch with the HR managers from all the top-tier construction firms. They’ve been really great in helping me get through the final rounds of the graduate programs.
