Bachelor of Biomedical Science

Duration: 2 Years Full-Time; Flexible Part-Time Available

Description

Biomedical Science is the study of the human body, and its structure and function in health and disease. This structured program develops student knowledge in the molecular, cellular, anatomical and physiological processes of the human body. There is a strong emphasis on developing scientific communication, research and writing skills, high level analytical reasoning and critical thinking. Additionally, the program provides students with the opportunity to acquire outstanding technical skills in our state-of-the-art laboratories. Extensive laboratory training and problem solving exercises, together with a case study approach to teaching, demonstrate to students the applications of biomedical science within a variety of clinical, research and allied healthcare settings.

Work Experience & Internships

Students enrolled in a Bachelor of Biomedical Science may be eligible to undertake the elective subject Internship in Health Sciences (HLSC13-750). This industry experience subject is for Academic Credit and involves students gaining on-the-job practical experience within an organisation relevant to their studies. Organisations students have conducted their industry experience at in the past include QML Pathology, Sullivan & Nicolaides Pathology, John Flynn Hospital, Gribbles Pathology and pharmaBank. 

Professional Outcomes

The broad scope of our biomedical science degree equips graduates for career opportunities in the healthcare industry, including employment in the pharmaceutical industry biotechnology sector, hospitals, health administration, diagnostic, veterinary/animal health and medical devices industries, and other related services. Graduates may also pursue biomedical research opportunities within universities and government and privately owned research institutes.

Further Study

Graduates can undertake research-based Honours study leading to a PhD or undertake further study in medicine, pharmacy, nutrition and dietetics, medical laboratory science, exercise/sports science or rehabilitation.
