General English courses help you to improve your English skills in reading, writing, listening and conversations.

You can enter at any level, from elementary to advanced, and progress at your own pace.

General English is suitable for individuals or for holiday groups, and it is good preparation for the English for Academic Purposes courses.

You can study General English for up to 3 months with a tourist visa, 4 months on a working holiday visa or for longer with a student visa.

Course Length

General English programs run throughout the year (except for ten days during the Christmas-New Year period).

You should note that:

  • you can commence your classes on any Monday, but our preferred start dates can be found on this page.
  • the minimum study period is two weeks.
  • for students on a student visa, study must be full time.
  • for students on tourist or working holiday visas, study may be full time or part time.
  • Full time students study 25 hours per week. If you are a part time student, you will study for 17.5 hours per week (mornings only).

Curriculum

We offer elementary to advanced classes. On arrival, you will be tested and placed in the best class for you. Classes are small and are organised to make sure that each group includes people from as many different countries as possible.

Classes at each level focus on everyday English, and you will have a variety of activities. These include: active listening; pair and group practice; vocabulary development; video clips; role play and drama; excursions to local places of interest; self-access language newspaper reading; discussion groups; writing workshops; daily journals (with corrections and grammar activities); music; television and movies; debates; games; speed reading etc.

Progress

Your work will be continuously monitored by your teachers to assess your progress. You will also complete homework and participate in classroom projects. You will have tests and receive a written report every 10 weeks.
