Student for a Semester

APPLICATIONS ARE NOW OPEN FOR JANUARY 2009

The Student for a Semester Program

This program offers the opportunity for intelligent, ambitious students who are in the top 30% of their year level to kick start their career while still at high school. Bond University’s Student for a Semester program (SFAS) allows Grade 11 and 12 High School students to experience life as a university student, sample a subject they may be interested in pursuing, and gain credit towards future university studies. Undertaking the Student for a Semester program at Bond University is a challenging but extremely beneficial experience and the student, their parents and their school must be confident that the student can also maintain their normal high school studies.

Student life

Students who are enrolled in SFAS have access to all Bond University facilities including the law and main libraries and the sport and recreation facilities, during their semester of study. They are also welcome to socialise in the cafes and restaurants, join student clubs and generally include themselves in university student life.

Subject timetable

The January 2009 Subject List is now available. Please view this PDF to decide on the subject that you would like to study and to select a suitable tutorial time.

Students can select their subject from the range of Business, Humanities & Social Sciences, Law and Health Sciences and Medicine offerings. Students enrolling in subjects that fall within normal school hours should liaise with their parents and school before applying. The student will be required to attend one lecture and one tutorial every week, depending on the subject requirements. There are no mid-semester breaks or holidays during this period and students must attend all of their lectures and tutorials during the semester. Please be aware that tutorial times are subject to change.

The Application Process

Student for a Semester Application Form

Students must return their Student for a Semester application to the Office of Admissions, ensuring that it contains:

  1. A completed application form signed by the student’s parent/guardian and the student’s principal or nominee.
  2. Certified copies (originals must be sighted and verified but a Justice of the Peace or appropriate representative) of their most recent senior school reports.

The application will be processed by the Office of Admissions and a “Letter of Offer” will be emailed to the student, with a copy sent to the school.

The student will need to accept their offer and pay tuition fees by the date specified in their Letter of Offer. Successful applicants will be contacted by Bond University via email regarding the details of the Orientation Day and further procedures.

Costs

Tuition for the first Student for a Semester subject is set at $210. The activites fee of $88 will be waived for students undertaking this program. Students wishing to complete a second subject under this program must submit a new application form with supporting documentation.

Students may also need to purchase textbooks and other relevant study materials. If a student needs to withdraw from the subject, they can do so without financial or academic penalty before Week 7 of the Semester. After this time the student will not be eligible for a tuition refund.

Student orientation and support

Orientation will take place from 3:00pm-5:00pm on the Friday of Bond Week (the week before classes commence). All students must attend this session to finalise their enrolment, receive their class timetable and their student identification card. Student for a Semester students will be treated as university students, however, they will also receive support and mentoring from Academic Advisers throughout the semester.

Assessment

Students will be required to complete all set assessment tasks for their chosen subject. These may include assignments, essays, quizzes, presentations and exams. To receive a good final grade, the student must successfully fulfill the set criteria.
