About the Symposium
The FBA Research & Education Symposium is an annual one-day programme that will bring together scholars and educators to interact with each other and the family business community to better understand what is and still needs to be known about the vast family business genre.
The Program Committee comprises:

Family Business Australia invites researchers, educators and doctoral students across all disciplines to participate in the 2011 Australian Family Business Research & Education Symposium by submitting an Abstract for consideration. Upon acceptance, full papers will be invited and peer reviewed for final acceptance.
Symposium theme
The Symposium theme is Family Business Research, Practice and Policy: Interpretation and Integration.
Symposium scope
Submissions from across all disciplines addressing a wide variety of related topic areas are encouraged.
Conceptual as well as empirical papers that pay particular attention to the implications of their research for family business are invited.
Symposium format
The Symposium will begin with a keynote address followed by roundtable presentations of papers and abstracts, facilitated by leading family business scholars. This interactive format is in place in order to maximise the benefit to the cross section of family business community stakeholders i.e., PhD students, academics, professional advisers, policy makers and family business practitioners.
Awards
Awards will be given in two categories:
- Best Paper Award
- Best Doctoral Student Paper Award
Abstract guidelines
Please note the following guidelines for the preparation of your Abstract.
- Cover page - should be a separate sheet
- Body – an Abstract of two pages excluding the cover page should be submitted with the Abstract Cover Page. All proposals should be single spaced, 12 point font, Times New Roman or similar.
The Abstract should include: - Topic of Research
- Method & Results
- Implications of Research
Paper guidelines
Please note the following guidelines for the preparation of your Paper.
- The paper (title, abstract, main text, figures, tables, references, etc.) must be in one document using one of pdf, doc or rtf formats.
- The maximum length of the paper is 15 pages (including all tables, appendices and references).
- The format for tables and figures, references, and appendices should follow the Academy of Management Journal’s Style Guide
- Use Times New Roman 12 point font, with single spacing and A4 page setting.
- Number all of the pages of the paper.
- Check that the paper prints correctly in black and white (i.e., all imported figures and tables appear and no colour is required).
Selection process
Abstracts will be reviewed by members of the Program Committee. Successful authors will be invited to submit a full paper for peer review. Feedback will be provided by expert reviewers to ensure that final papers and presentations provide maximum benefit to Symposium stakeholders.
Presentation
Author/presenters will be required to provide in advance a PowerPoint slide deck of 6 slides which will be used during their presentation. FBA will produce the poster for your presentation. These posters will be displayed at the FBA annual conference following the Symposium so it will be necessary to include reference to the broader implications of the research.
Deadlines
The key dates for submissions are as follows.
- Abstract submission 7 March 2011
- Initial author notification 21 March 2011
- Full paper submission 22 April 2011
- Full paper acceptance 24 May 2011
Authors will then be asked to submit their revised papers by 30 June 2011 and provide copy for the poster preparation by 22 July 2011.
Distribution of papers
Proceedings will be made available electronically.
Venue & accommodation details
The Symposium will be held at the Hyatt Regency Perth Hotel, 99 Adelaide Terrace, Perth.
Registration fees for the Symposium are as follows:
Doctoral students $100.00 per person including GST
Full time academics $120.00 per person including GST
Advisers & Family Business owners $150.00 per person including GST
Accommodation is available at the Hyatt from $215 per night or at a range of hotels nearby including the Perth YMCA, which is 10 minutes walk from the venue, with rates from $50 per night.

Following the Research & Education Symposium, Family Business Australia will be holding its Annual National Conference in Perth from 1 - 3 September 2011.
