Abstract
Paul examines the notion of leadership as a social influence process, using thoughtful communication based on relationships. Leadership practices are examined, and how do they help business? So, he searched for evidence of leadership agility practices based on the capability to DEEPLY CONNECT with people’s values (heart & soul – for belonging), thoughts (for improvement innovations), communications and relationships (for trust), in order to sustain organisations over time. In the most recent (2010) CEO study, which is based on interviews with more than 1,500 CEO’s worldwide; two primary themes emerged that had not appeared in previous studies.
- The first theme was managing complexity and the second was developing the creative capacity in the organisation to innovate in response to the shifting marketplace demands in a world of escalating complexity.
- Speed, combined with flexibility of response, and adaptability to change was the challenge of greatest concern! (The Conference Board, 2010)
Agile leaders recognise this new reality and need to become better at navigating this new world with their followers. Existing knowledge about leadership development, leadership learning as ‘apprenticeship’, leadership as reflective practice are examined. Perhaps most importantly, practical implications are posited.
