Business Links Masterclass. Fraud – The Costly Danger Business Can’t Afford to Ignore

All businesses are subject to the risk of fraud. The world loses an estimated 5% of annual revenues to fraud, according to a recent study by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners.

Bond University’s Faculty of Business, as an extension to International Fraud Awareness Week, presents a panel discussion on fraud, including lessons from past major frauds, fraud in the public sector and in small business, and how business might best respond. Understanding more about fraud can save your business money in the future.

Panel Biography

David Van Homrigh

David Van Homrigh is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia and an Adjunct Professor in the University of Queensland Business School. He is a very experienced Forensic Accountant, having formed the business, KPMG Forensic, in 1998 and for a period of 8 years he was a member of the Global KPMG Forensic Steering Group leading the development of the global Forensic business within KPMG International. His experience in litigation and fraud has included numerous major matters across Asia Pacific and in a number of different sectors including government, mining and resources, telecommunications, ship building and motor vehicle manufacturing, amongst others. Major engagements have included asset tracing, fraud investigations, anti-bribery and corruption investigations and due diligence reviews, expert evidence in major litigation and arbitration disputes, and post-acquisition disputes.

Sharlene Anderson

Sharlene Anderson is the founding director of Veritas Corporation, specialising in Assurance and Forensic Accounting services. She is a Registered Company Auditor and has significant experience auditing across various legislative frameworks, and is known for her practical approach. In addition to her role with Veritas she is a Quality Assurance Reviewer for CPA Australia, Chair of the CPA Queensland Public Practice Committee and President of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners Brisbane Chapter. With particular interest in the areas of Risk Management, Forensic Accounting and Fraud, she provides consulting services to various clients including large private companies, small businesses, universities and government bodies such as the ATO.

Len Scanlan

Len Scanlan has extensive experience in auditing, particularly in the public sector. He was Auditor-General of Queensland from 1997 to 2004 and in this role was responsible for the audits of all local governments and State public sector entities. A current Fellow and former Queensland President of CPA Australia, he is also a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia, the Institute of Internal Auditors (Australia), the Australian Institute of Company Directors and the Institute of Public Administration Australia. Currently, he sits on multiple boards and operates a consultancy focusing on audit committees, governance and boards.

Adrian Gepp

Adrian Gepp is a doctoral student in the Faculty of Business studying models to detect and predict fraud in corporate financial statements. He has published academic articles on a number of topics, including detecting car insurance fraud and predicting business failure. He attained first class honours for his postgraduate studies after receiving university medals for both his undergraduate degrees. Since then, he has taught finance, economics and statistics at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
