Excursion gives tourism students a taste of travel

28 April 2011

Students from the School of Hotel, Resort and Tourism Management got out of the classroom recently and had a firsthand look at a vital tourism business.

Postgraduate students from the Tourism Economics subject visited the Gold Coast Airport and saw the workings of the successful transport operation.

Associate Professor Michael Raybould said the excursion was a vital part of the School’s approach of integrating theory with practical experience.

“The excursion was a practical demonstration of the theory they had been learning. Dennis Chant, Managing Director of Queensland Airports Limited, talked to the students about their business model and the growth of the Gold Coast Airport over the last few years,” said Dr Raybould.

“Students then had a tour of the new terminal facilities, including the secure baggage handling area and immigration, and a demonstration of the airline check-in information systems.

“This excursion has given the students a better understanding of the airline and airport business model, as well as an improved understanding of how critical transport is in the tourism system.”

Excursions like this are a regular part of the programs offered by the School of Hotel, Resort and Tourism Management. The School has close ties with hotel and tourism industry leaders, which results in tangible outcomes for Bond students, including excursions, guest lectures, internship placements and networking opportunities.
