A group of undergraduate students studying at Bond’s School of Business had the opportunity to attend a training session with the Gold Coast Titans national rugby league team recently.
The students visited the Titans Centre of Excellence and inspected the training facilities before watching the team train. They then got to try out their own skills and learnt how to pass the ball, beat a defender and pack a scrum. The students who participated were completing Bond’s International Marketing and Doing Business in Australia subjects.
Adjunct Lecturer Don Jolly said the experience was invaluable to the students, many of whom were international and had never seen rugby league before.
“The Titans were very generous in offering our students this experience. Sport plays such an important role in Australian society, so I wanted our students to get a firsthand look at one of our most popular sports,” Mr Jolly said.
“It provided an opportunity for us to take teaching outside of the classroom and for the students to get a better understanding of the role professional sport plays in the economy and identity of Australia.”
Following the training session, the students had the opportunity to attend the next home game the Titans played.
Edie Douglas, a study abroad student from the United States, said the experience was a unique way to experience the Australian sporting culture.
“It was interesting to see the similarities between rugby league and similar sports back home. I have heard a few Australians say how sport here really brings people together and sparks nationalism, so it was interesting to see that take form in an actual game setting,” said Edie.
The School of Business always strives to provide a dynamic learning environment that goes beyond the textbook. For more information about study opportunities visit www.bond.edu.au/business.
