Service Learning “Students who engage in service-learning projects have an opportunity to translate theory into practice. Service-learning is about real-world, real-time experiences. It provides students with opportunities to learn through application - creating a product or service that benefits the larger community around them, with the community-based partner organisations gaining expertise they may not otherwise have access to or be able to afford.” “These types of projects are particularly important for business students, as providing opportunities for students to develop their civic responsibilities and social awareness is a key component of today’s business education. In today’s business world, silos no longer exist. Students need to understand the links and interdependencies that bind all members of their local, national and international communities. They need to be able to look beyond the bottom line into the larger picture.” Dr. Amy Kenworthy Associate Professor of Management About Service Learning As a service-learning student, you will be applying the skills you are learning in class to real-world organisations with real-world needs. You will engage with the local community, gain valuable work experience and enjoy the value of giving back. Service learning projects help to generate a sense of social responsibility that you will carry with you into your future professional career and community memberships. You will undertake a project that is fully integrated into your specific studies. You might develop a computer program, design a business or strategic plan or create marketing or outreach materials. Your service-learning projects will be overseen by Dr Amy Kenworthy, an international award winning service-learning author and practitioner who has been working the service-learning domain for over 17 years.
