Research within the School of Hotel, Resort and Tourism Management

Applied and highly topical research is an integral part of Bond University’s School of Hotel, Resort and Tourism Management. The research outcomes are incorporated in all subjects that are taught within the School and allow students to maximise their educational experience.

The current research interests encompass:

Tourism and Hospitality Marketing

The School has research expertise in tourism and hospitality marketing. Past projects include studies of the factors leading to the development of hotel guest loyalty; information search strategies of tourists when planning travel; and cooperative tourism marketing initiatives. Most recently, research focusing on the key success factors required to successfully market regional tourism destinations has been conducted. Another current research focus is the role of consumer generated content (social media) on the travel and hospitality consumer market. The results of these projects have been published in a range of journals including the Journal of Hospitality Marketing & Management; Journal of Vacation Marketing; Journal of Travel Research and Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Research.

Sustainable Tourism

Sustainability is a key aspect across all research and teaching areas in the School of Hotel, Resort and Tourism Management. Research in sustainable tourism within the School covers a range of topics including ecotourism, regional economic diversification and indigenous tourism. Past projects investigated tourism as an alternative income source for farming families with a particular focus on the internal dynamics of farm tourism business operations.

Research is currently conducted on factors that determine the long-term success of indigenous tourism operations. Indigenous tourism is an essential part of the overall tourism experience in Australia. Unfortunately it has not received the status it deserves. There are a number of assumptions surrounding the management of indigenous tourism businesses and barriers to their success. The outcomes of this study can have major implications for the development of this tourism sector.
