High Intensity Exercise Performance and Endurance

Measuring gene expression changes as a novel technique for high intensity training prescription

What is this study about?

This project involves investigating the effects of high intensity exercise on the human body’s ability to carry and use oxygen. In addition, this study is to examine the gene expression changes in muscle tissue and in blood in response to high intensity exercise, and whether the changes in gene expression can be used as a better way to prescribe exercise.

Why is the study important?

The aim of the proposed study is to investigate high intensity exercise and its effect on physiological and biochemical adaptation and regulation in relation to athletic performance. Also, by establishing the degree of similarities between the white blood cells and muscle tissue in terms of gene expression in response to an exercise intervention, a specific and individual exercise prescription approach can be developed. By implementing this approach, it may be possible to optimise adaptation and avoid overtraining and illness.

Benefits of participating in the study

By volunteering for this study you will receive the following:

  • VO2max (maximum oxygen consumption) test on a cycle ergometer
  • Wingate test (30sec all out sprint) will give you results such as: Peak power, Average power & Fatigue index
  • Full blood count - Your Red blood cells for individual oxygen carrying capacity and your white blood cells for an indication of your immune function
  • Each test will be analysed by a Sport Scientist and each threshold will be calculated
  • Information on how to use thresholds in your training programme will be provided

Who is eligible to participate?

  • Males aged 18 - 35 years who train regularly, e.g., cyclists or triathletes

Requirements

  • 6 - 8 week commitment
  • Willingness and ability to go to Bond University up to 20 times during the study period
  • Regular medical, exercise, blood and muscle tests
