Water Based Research

Surfing

As surfing continues to evolve with more aerial and radical turning manoeuvres we are seeing an increase in the types and severity of injuries, both acute and chronic (lasting longer than 3 months). At present, there is a lack of current information about the major causes, patterns, risk factors and location of acute and chronic injury in surfers (recreational and competitive).

Overview

This online survey aims to provide a national snapshot of surfing injuries (i.e., identify areas of body which may be prone to injury or already injured and offer solutions to current and potential problems)within all types of surfers.

Location

This research is being conducted out of the Faculty of Health Science and Medicine at Bond University.

Eligibility

This survey is the first of three research projects involving surfers and will potentially provide surfers who participate in the survey with an opportunity for participation in the second research project to be physically assessed (musculoskeletal assessment and fitness testing) by the principle investigator (who is a qualified Physiotherapist) at Bond University’s Water Based Research Unit (Robina).

Benefits

This type of assessment (musculoskeletal assessment and fitness testing) will be at no cost to participants and extremely beneficial to any level of surfer as it will identify areas of weakness or tightness and also provide assessment of the surfers level of aerobic fitness, anaerobic fitness and indices of health (blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose).
