Message from the Dean

raoul mortley in index page

Students and colleagues,

The Faculty, consisting of the School of Communication and Media, School of Humanities and the School of Social Sciences, has over its twenty-one years of existence, brought together an emphasis on the applied and vocational and the truly academic.

A university is fundamentally about inquiry, and the development of knowledge: knowledge on the part of students, who are being educated, and knowledge on the part of the staff researchers, who are themselves contributing to the development of knowledge in an absolute sense.

In the Faculty, we balance this with an attention to the real skills needed in the workplace; today’s university serves the service economy and we train people to join it. We emphasise workplace readiness through hands-on education and the provision of internships and clinical placements.

At the same time, we provide a full suite of scholarly and scientific subjects, where development of critical intellectual skills is held in the greatest importance.

A full list of subjects and our two-year schedule, is available in our handbook and on this website.

Welcome to the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Professor Raoul Mortley AO FAHA
Dean, Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences

About the Faculty

One of the most innovative of its kind in Australia, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences through its Schools of Humanities, Communication and Media and Social Sciences offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in many different study areas, ranging from International Relations, Psychology and Criminology through to Journalism, Film and Television and Computer Games to name a few.

With a strong emphasis on vocationally oriented students, the subjects offered reflect the University’s international role and underline its commitment to Australia and its immediate interests.

In all study areas, the very latest theory and research is applied to real-life practice, with the opportunity for internships and work experience, and the faculty prides itself on offering a challenging intellectual climate that encourages students to widen their sense of what is humanly possible.
