Message from the Dean
Students and colleagues,
The Faculty, consisting of a variety of disciplines including Communication, Film and Television, Journalism, Social Sciences, International Relations and other humanities subjects has over its twenty-three years of existence, brought together an emphasis on the applied and vocational, and truly academic inquiry.
A university is fundamentally about inquiry, and the development of knowledge: knowledge on the part of students, who are being educated, and knowledge on the part of the staff researchers, who are themselves contributing to the development of knowledge in an absolute sense.
In the Faculty, we balance this with an attention to the real skills needed in the workplace; today’s university serves the service economy and we train people to join it. We emphasise workplace readiness through hands-on education and we provide a full range of internships and clinical placements.
At the same time, we provide a full suite of scholarly and scientific subjects, where development of critical intellectual skills and methods is held to be of the greatest importance.
A full list of subjects and our two-year schedule is available in our handbook and on this website.
Welcome to the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
Professor Raoul Mortley AO FAHA
Dean, Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences
