Bond University Professional Forum: Presented by Dr Rebekah Doley

Out of the ashes: Confronting serial arson in Australia

Arson related bushfires are increasingly being recognised as one of the major challenges for law enforcement and emergency services within our rural communities. The treatment of bushfire arsonists, and firesetters more generally, has become a focal point in discussions around how best to manage this type of criminal behaviour. Australia has a particular opportunity to be a world leader in understanding and managing this dangerous crime. Arsonists are among our most dangerous offenders and bushfire arsonists in particular present an enormous threat to the safety of our rural communities. The devastation wrought by the 2009 Victorian bushfires has brought this issue to our attention and much public discussion has occurred as to how to better manage this risk.

The current state of play and the way forward in managing arson offenders in Australia are the central themes of this professional forum on deliberate firesetting. The forum is designed to provoke and engage the Australian community including practitioners, industry and academics in considering better ways to prevent serial arson.

Dr Rebekah Doley, author of “A snapshot of serial arson in Australia” and consultant to industry and government on managing arson offenders, advances a provocative and hopeful scenario for the Australian community.

Our challenge now lies in converting our commitment to publically debate this topic into practical and useful strategies for better managing this crime. How can Australia become a leading power in the field of arson
