Writing for the News Media

Students Tweeting from First Semester

Journalism students are fine-tuning their news writing skills by Tweeting their stories to a Twitter and Facebook site from their very first subject – Writing for the News Media.

The new stream was introduced to the program in the May semester, 2010. It is really a case of ‘old meets new’ because journalists have always had to sum up the main points of their stories in the ‘lead’ or ‘intro’ – their very first sentence.

Twitter requires them to communicate the whole story in no more than 140 characters.

One of the best Tweets of the semester came from students Courtney Wilkie and Sophie Whish with: “The sale of commercial properties by Solmac Developments has left locals with mixed views about the future of Market Square.” Another was from Natasha Cruz: “Debate over whether the facilities in the multimedia learning centre (MLC) should be for study or play has arisen.” Rhania Farah tapped into the federal election debate at the time, writing: “Some students feel Julia Gillard doesn’t deserve to be Prime Minister because of the circumstance in which she received the top job.”

The stream complements the other publishing components of their entry-level subject where students get to go deeper with their reporting - for a campus print newsletter Bond Briefs and in multimedia format for the community portal Varsity Lakes Online.
