Economic and political globalisation now affects the scope and nature of lawyers’ activities in many ways. The Symposium will reflect on structural and systemic issues and developments in the education and experience of lawyers at all stages of their career. These include the convergence of common and civil law concepts and systems, cross border legal practice, advocacy in cross border arbitration, and the education of lawyers at undergraduate, graduate, and continuing levels. These developments now occur in every continent. The discussion will build on the themes emerging from our Internationalisation Conference held in 2009.
The Symposium will bring together the perspectives of academics, practising lawyers and adjudicators to debate how we can meet the developing needs of global society. The focus of the discussions during the Symposium will be on the form and content of existing initiatives in multi-jurisdictional education and what we can learn from them, as well as entirely new models and concepts. Participants will contribute insights from civil law and common law jurisdictions and from global arbitration practice.
The Symposium will open with welcome messages from both Professor Geraldine Mackenzie, Dean of the Faculty of Law and Pro-Vice Chancellor of Research and Professor Tim Brailsford, Vice Chancellor at Bond University and will be followed by our keynote speaker, Professor Jürgen Basedow from Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Private Law in Hamburg, The program sessions will consist of presentations ranging from the different national philosophies of legal education, evolving initiatives in legal education for the global practice of law, solicitors insights from an international perspective and advocacy in litigation and arbitration are just some of the topics that will be discussed.
On Friday evening, 23 November, our symposium will combine with our biennial dinner to honour Sir Owen Dixon, and to inaugurate the Dixon Oration, which will be given by Professor Gillian Triggs, the newly-inaugurated President of the Human Rights Commission. The dinner will be held in our on campus University Club, commencing with a drinks reception and followed by dinner. The dress code for this dinner can be either business attire or Black Tie.
