The Faculty of Law and the Centre for Commerical Law at Bond University invite you to a Colloquium on Sport, and Diplomacy, Development and Governance.
On 28 November 2012, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution on sport entitled ‘Sport as a means to promote education, health, development and peace.’ The resolution encourages the use of sport as a vehicle to foster development and strengthen education, prevent disease, empower girls and women, promote the inclusion and well-being of persons with disabilities, and facilitate conflict prevention and peace-building. In that context, the purpose of the Colloquium is to consider the broader role of sport in fostering international relations, and as a tool of diplomacy in fostering community development and reconciliation. The Colloquium will also include speakers on internal governance issues within high profile sporting organisations, and international pro bono activities.
The Guest Speaker, Ms Deslie Billich, will draw on her extensive international experience to deliver a paper entitled ‘Sport: A Tool in the Toolbox for Reconciliation? Ms Billich is an experienced legal and policy advisor with 30 years of experience in the field of legal public policy, legal advocacy, public sector management and private sector legal defense. She is a director of Global Reconciliation devising and implementing programmes in the field with civil society, has worked in Africa, Middle East and Afghanistan in rule of law, human rights, trafficking and criminal justice programmes, and also with public sector ministries.
