Career Action Wall Planner: Bachelor of Laws (Non-combined)

Top employers today are looking for graduates with the proven ability to balance study commitments with work experience and other extracurricular activities. They want the whole package - illustrating a well-rounded and proactive employee. Further, leave your graduate job search until your final semester, and be prepared for the reality you may not find a job for up to 12 months. A vast amount of recruitment processes run up to one year ahead of the starting time (from January of your final year).

  • Meet with the Graduate Development Office to discuss career plans
  • Get involved in campus life - student associations etc.
  • Work part time (legal or non-legal) to develop "soft skills"
  • Attend Graduate Development Office workshops on networking, resumes and interviews
  • Register profile on CareerHub (to start receiving newsletters based on your profile information)
  • Undertake research of your own into the legal profession and possible career paths
  • Meet with Graduate Development Office to revise resumes, and cover letters for clerkship applications
  • Log on and register with www.cvmail.com.au as early as possible - some closing dates are as early as Jan and Feb
  • Apply for advertised clerkship programs in March (QLD)
  • Attend QLS Legal Careers Fair - March
  • Prepare for clerkship interviews
  • Undertake part-time work
  • Attend Law Firm presentations on campus
  • Undertake clerkships or work experience
  • Meet withGraduate Development Office to revise your resumes and cover letters for graduate applications
  • Attend Graduate Development Office Graduate Recruitment Workshops
  • Attend Employer Fair on campus - March
  • Apply for Graduate Recruitment (must have maximum amount of experience on resume to support graduate applications)
  • Prepare for interviews
  • Participate in graduate recruitment process - ensure interview skills and negotiation skills are finely honed
  • Negotiate and accept graduate opportunity
Semester2
  • Meet with Graduate Development staff to discuss work experience opportunities
  • Apply for work experience
  • Apply for part-time work
  • Stay involved with campus/ community or sporting life
  • Attend Graduate Development Office workshops
  • Develop list of employers of choice and undertake information interviews to build relationships with employers of interest
  • Participate in clerkship recruitment process - ensure interview skills and negotiation skills are finely honed
  • Undertake part-time work
  • Stay involved with campus/community or sporting life
  • Attend Law Firm presentations on campus
  • Prepare interstate clerkship/ work experience applications as necessary
  • Continue to achieve academically
  • Enjoy the last semester with your graduate opportunity secured
  • Register for alumni email address and database
  • GRADUATE
Semester3
  • Undertake work experience
  • Undertake part-time work
  • Stay involved with campus/ community or sporting life
  • Review resume and application tools/processes
