Bond University student amongst Prime Minister’s Top 20

05 December 2011

Bond University Law / International Relations student, Jenny Leo, has received one of Australia’s most prestigious scholarships to study overseas as one of only 20 undergraduate students Australia-wide to receive a 2012 Prime Minister’s Australia Asia Award.

These awards provide financial support for Australian students to undertake study or research at leading universities in Asia and are aimed at developing internationally-aware future leaders.

“I feel so honoured to have been selected,” said Jenny.

“I applied to study in China, undertaking subjects in Chinese law and language at Peking University, based on my belief that our future economic ties with China will be greatly enhanced by Australia fostering the education of legal professionals who are conversant with Chinese law and legal practices.”

The first component of Jenny’s scholarship will incorporate studies in Chinese commerce, contract, company and foreign investment law, while the second stage will involve practical work experience via an internship with a Chinese law firm.

With her departure set for August next year, she is planning to study and work in China for up to two years.

Jenny’s achievement marks the second time a Bond University student has been recognised by the Prime Minister’s Australia Asia Award, following the 2010 scholarship awarded to fellow Law / International Relations student, Tom Harrison, who attended Soochow University last year.

Bond University Vice-Chancellor Professor Robert Stable said this second scholarship win was exceptional and demonstrated Bond’s ability to produce some of Australia’s best and brightest students.

“This award win is an outstanding personal achievement for Jenny and a reflection of the tremendous commitment she has to her studies, as well as the dedication Bond University has to helping our students succeed,” said Professor Stable.

“The Prime Minister’s Australia Asia Outgoing Undergraduate Awards are only offered to a  select few scholars each year but they represent a unique opportunity for students and the University to build and strengthen international educational alliances, further deepening our Australia-Asia ties.”
