Welcome from the Dean

2011 has seen the first, small cohort of students embark on their Bachelor of Architectural Studies undergraduate degree … a six semester program to be followed by 2 semesters of work experience and then four semesters of Masters of Architecture.

The program is design focused and supplemented by practical workshop activities, field trips, symposia and visiting speakers. Studio assignments have been purposefully designed to introduce the students to the intellectual, material and spatial culture of architecture; seeing, understanding and responding to the parameters of place; recognizing landscape as architecture … all intended to foster design and strategic thinking skills and the value of risk taking in the creative process.

Leveraging off the growth and success of the Mirvac School of Sustainable Development, Bond University is proud to be introducing the Institute of Sustainable Development and Architecture. The Institute will comprise the Mirvac School of Sustainable Development and the Soheil Abedian School of Architecture.

Our vision for the Institute is unique but simple; we aim to combine teaching excellence with practical experience to deliver top class sustainability graduates. Our facilities are second to none including the first building in Australia to achieve a 6 Star Green Star – Education PILOT Certified Rating for design by the Green Building Council of Australia.

Our building has been recognised internationally as a leader in sustainability winning the 2009 Royal Institution of Charted Surveyors Award of Sustainability. In addition to this we are proud to promote the following awards for the building:

  • 2009 Sustainable Industries Award for “Sustainability in the Built Environment”
  • 2009 Australian Institute of Architects State Award for “Sustainable Architecture” Award
  • Gold Coast City Council - 2009 Urban Design Awards: Award of Excellence in Urban Design, People’s Choice Award, and the Sue Robbins Award for Excellence in Urban Design
  • Winner of the United Nations Association of Australia World Environment Day Awards 2010: Szencorp Green Building Award.

Bond University’s Institute of Sustainable Development and Architecture is dedicated to the concept and practice of sustainability by integrating design, planning, property, construction, urban development and sustainable science education. Our range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses covers sustainable development and property, architecture and urban planning as well as the sustainable science fields of environmental management and environmental science. The variety of courses maintain a single vision of minimising environmental impacts; an issue of pertinence in today’s society.

Our classes are delivered by expert teaching staff who are dedicated to educating the sustainability professionals of the future. Our intimate small class structure means that each student is nurtured to achieve their professional bests.

I look forward to welcoming you to the Institute of Sustainable Development and Architecture.
