Post Copenhagen: How can real progress on Climate Change be achieved?
Bond University is proud to host a VIP Guest Lecture presented by The Honourable Robert Hill in his position as Chairman of Australian Carbon Trust.
Professor Hill was a member of the Australian Senate from 1981 to 2006, representing South Australia. He was educated at the University of Adelaide and the London School of Economics, where he gained a masters degree in law. He was Leader of the Government in the Senate from March 1996 until his resignation in January 2006. He was Minister for the Environment 1996-98, Minister for the Environment and Heritage 1998-2001 and Minister for Defence from November 2001 to January 2006.
In July 2005 the Coalition parties took control of the Senate and Professor Hill became the first Government Leader in the Senate since 1981 to command a majority in the chamber. In January 2006 he announced his resignation from the Parliament. Professor Hill was Australian Ambassador to the United Nations for Australia from 2006 - 2009. In July 2009, Professor Hill was appointed by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd as Chairman of the Australian Carbon Trust.
Professor Hill is an Adjunct Professor in Sustainability at the United States Studies Centre of the University of Sydney and Chancellor of the University of Adelaide.
The Australian Carbon Trust supports energy efficiency action by businesses. It is a Commonwealth company limited by guarantee, with an independent Board of Directors. The Australian Carbon Trust manages two initiatives:
- The Energy Efficiency Trust provides information and tools for businesses to effectively participate in Australia’s climate change response; and
- The National Carbon Offset Standard Carbon Neutral Program
Carbon remains one of the key environmental impacts associated with the construction and use of the built environment, and Australia must continue to encourage and implement energy efficiency measures in the push towards carbon neutrality. Not only are such measures available now, but they are fast and cost-effective opportunities for greenhouse gas abatement.
