Australian Experience

Six Week Program

June 7th to July 18th, 2009

The focus of the program will be on learning by experience. Field trips will have seminar and supervised assignment components which will be held in art galleries, museums and other institutions visited as part of this program.

Darwin & the red centre

The program travels to the Northern Territory, flying to Darwin, Australia’s most northerly capital city. Focussing on the environmental and ecological issues, we will explore the city, with classes in the nearby Territory Wildlife Park and Litchfield National Park. Australia’s most famous train - The Ghan - will take us to Alice Springs via Katherine Gorge, one of several beautiful sites we will visit that have spiritual significance for Australia’s Aboriginal people. In the ‘red centre’ of the Territory’s desert regions, we will study the amazing variety of fauna and flora which flourishes here and learn first-hand about the life of indigenous Australians who have inhabited these lands for tens of thousands of years. We will visit Uluru (Ayers Rock), Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) and Watarrka (Kings Canyon). We then return to classes on the Gold Coast.

Canberra & Sydney

Fly to the national capital, Canberra, and start with a city tour and check out some of the main embassy buildings, including that of the United States. During our week in Canberra, we will attend several presentations and guided tours to the national Parliament buildings, National Museum of Australia, the Australian War memorial and the National Film and Sound Archives. There will also be some time to pursue your own project and assignment work and to socialise with students in residence at the Australian National University.

Travelling through some of the oldest and richest farming country in New South Wales, we head to Sydney for four days in Australia’s oldest City. Our explorations include the historic remains of the early convict era, the Australian art collections in the art gallery of NSW and, of course, the famous Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House
