Message from the Head of Psychology

Mark Edwards - Head of Psychology

Psychology is an exciting and diverse field of study dedicated to understanding, predicting and controlling the causes of behaviour and thought. Psychology graduates are afforded diverse employment opportunities as they specialise throughout the course of their training. Although various exit points and career opportunities exist along the way, full registration as a professional psychologist requires the completion of an Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) accredited 4 year sequence of study in Psychology plus the completion of an APAC approved 2 year Masters Degree (or 2 years of supervised practice).

In our Undergraduate Bachelor of Social Science (Psychology) program students are provided with a scientific grounding in the study of normal psychological processes such as perception, memory, learning, motivation, psychobiology, personality, emotion, developmental psychology and social relationships, as well as in abnormal psychology. Completion of this degree prepares students for entry into our 4th year programs of study. For students who hold an undergraduate Degree in another discipline, we offer a Graduate Diploma in Psychology which is an accredited bridging Degree designed to prepare graduates from any background for entry to our 4th year Postgraduate Diploma of Psychology program.

Following on from our undergraduate programs, we offer accredited 4th Year training in the Bachelor of Social Sciences (Psychology) with Honours and the Postgraduate Diploma in Psychology. These programs permit advanced study in a range of areas and provide individual training designed to enhance research skills. Completion of our 4th Year programs offers direct entry into our Master of Psychology programs provided other entry requirements are met.

Our Master of Psychology (Clinical) and Master of Psychology (Forensic) programs apply the knowledge and skills learned in Undergraduate studies to the evidence-based principles required for assessment and intervention. Students are trained in professional skills through small group class work, clinical case supervision in our on-Campus Psychology Clinic, and in clinical internships under supervision in community settings. Under supervision, students also conduct an individual research project in their area of specialisation.

At Bond, our Undergraduate, 4th year, and Postgraduate programs are all APAC accredited. Our Postgraduate coursework Degrees enable students to gain the Qualifications required to apply for registration as a psychologist and membership to the Australian Psychological Society (APS). Obtaining full registration as a psychologist would normally take six years of study or more but, with Bond’s three-semesters-per-year schedule, you can qualify to register as a psychologist in less than five years of full-time study.
