Urban Design and Planning Research Guide

Journal articles

All of the Library's subscription databases for journal articles can be found on the Electronic Resources page. Here are some of the key databases you might start your search with:

Ebsco Megafile Complete - multidisciplinary database specialising in academic journals, magazines and newspapers, many with full text and images.  Select "Academic Search Complete" and "Business Source Complete" from the list of Ebsco databases. 

Proquest Central - multidisciplinary database with over 9,000 titles in full-text. Covers many subject areas including urban design, planning and architecture.

Sage Journals Online - over 450 full-text Sage journals, including good coverage for Urban Studies and Planning

Informit - (select Informit Collections and Plus-Text databases) - a set of smaller multidisciplinary database with unique Australian content.

Summon - searches over 50 databases at once and is probably the easiest way to search across the greatest number of journal articles. Once you've done your search, click 'Journal Article' on the left to limit your results to the available journal articles.

If you're looking for a specific article, or want to know if you can access a specific journal, enter the name of the journal into the e-Journal Portal.


Specialised Electronic Resources
:

Environment Design Guide (EDG) - produced by the Australian Institute of Architects, the EDG contains papers on key themes and topics relating to built and natural environment sustainability.

GreenFILE - a freely accessible research database focusing on the relationship between human beings and the environment, with information on topics ranging from global warming to recycling to alternate fuel sources.  Select "GreenFILE" from the list of available Ebsco Databases.

OECD iLibrary - a range of publications and statistics from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, including themes on urban, rural and regional development, transport, the environment and sustainable development.

RP Data - Queensland and Northern New South Wales property information including property ownership, property sales history, electronic mapping, property attributes and photographs, properties for sale, properties for rent or lease. Please ask your Sustainable Development lecturer or contact the Library  for a username and password.

RUDI (Resource for Urban Design Information) - a UK web resource dedicated to urban design and placemaking, including examples of good practice, design guides, access to policy papers and full text of the journal Urban Design (three month embargo on most recent issue).

Urban Design Compendium - a companion website to two Urban Design Compendium publications (also available for download from the site), providing guidance on good urban design – summarising the principles of urban design, how they can be applied and the processes which lead to successful places. 
 

Books

You can search for books related to construction and building surveying using the Library Catalogue. Here are some example searches; click these links to see the available books for each of these subjects:

"urban design"subject contains "city planning"(town* or city) and architecture"new urbanism"

 You can also search for books using Summon (the search box on the Library homepage); there is a video here which will quickly show you how. Whether you use the Library Catalogue or Summon to find books is up to you.
 

eBooks

You'll find eBooks when you search for books using either the Library Catalogue or Summon. If you want to you can search the individual eBook platforms to see what they have: you'll find urban design and planning eBooks in ebrary and EBL.

Planning Schemes

A small number of planning schemes are available in hardcopy or on CD-ROM in the Library.

You may also find planning schemes on the web, for example those for the Gold Coast and Brisbane.
