Troubleshooting Tips

Firewalls

Firewalls are used to prevent unauthorized access to a network or computer. If you have a personal firewall and are having problems accessing the library's electronic resources, you may need to disable the firewall while using that electronic resource or create an exception per your firewall instructions. Please note: Disabling the firewall may make your computer or network vulnerable to intrusions. If you are part of a network (school or company), then you should contact your Systems Administrator about possible firewall issues.  Please consult with your software manual and/or contact the software company's technical support for help in setting your security software if required.

Windows XP includes its own firewall called Internet Connection Firewall (ICF), or Windows Firewall (XP Service Pack 2). If it is enabled, it is possible that it may cause problems accessing databases.

Pop Up Killers

With Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), Internet Explorer allows you to prevent most pop-up windows from appearing over pages you want to view while you are using the Internet. After installation of SP2 the pop up blocker is turned on in Internet Explorer and set to the medium setting, which means it will block most automatic pop-ups. Some electronic resources require you to turn off this feature of Internet Explorer.

To change Pop-up Blocker settings:

Tip: To temporarily allow a site to display pop-ups, click the Information Bar when it notifies you that a pop-up has been blocked. Then click Temporarily Allow Pop-ups.

Other Pop-Up Killers are included in the Google toolbar. Click on the button (shown in the graphic below) to turn the pop-ups on or off.
