Linking to the Library Databases

The Library has provided some tools to help you construct deep links to journal articles and other documents located in databases.
Please use the forms provided to build links to ensure that students can access articles from off-campus. Not all of the databases enable persistent links. In these cases please talk to your liaison librarian about other options. If you have any problems using these tools, or you require assistance building links to freely available databases the Library can provide assistance.

Some databases provide more than one method of linking, in these cases you may see the databases listed more than once.

Databases or journals that provide a DOI* or document ID :

  • ACM - digital library
  • Blackwell Journals
  • Factiva
  • Kluwer via Springerlink
  • Nature
  • Oxford Journals
  • Science Direct
  • Wiley Interscience

Databases or journals displaying base URLS

  • ACM - digital library
  • AGIS - via Informit
  • APAFT via Informit
  • Datanalysis
  • Hein Online
  • Kluwer via Springerlink
  • NBER
  • Ovid - Psycbooks and Psycarticles
  • ProQuest

Special linking tools

Useful Links:

 e-Journal Portal

Deep linking not enabled for:
  • CCH
  • Lexis.com
  • Taxpoint
Free resources using DOIs:
Cochrane Library

Linking to an entire database

You can also provide a link to a database rather than to a specific article. This link will also require the authentication string. To do so, you can copy and paste the entire URL, including the authentication string, from the Library’s Alphabetical List of Electronic Resources. Find the name of the database to which you want to link, right click on the database name and select “copy shortcut.” You can then paste this URL into your document. To paste, right click at the spot where you would like the URL and select “paste.” The URL will be inserted.

Linking to Free Resources

You can often just copy and paste the URL from the browser address bar. However, some services use session data in URLs and once this expires the links will no longer work. Contact your liaison librarian for assistance.

If a free service uses DOIs, you can simply add the DOI to the end of http://dx.doi.org/. This is a DOI indexing server that will redirect the user to the correct location. Eg. http://dx.doi.org/10.1002/14651858.CD003423.

This method can be used for the Cochrane Library.

* Digital Object Identifier (DOI): A digital object identifier (or DOI) is a permanent identifier given to a World Wide Web file or other Internet document so that if its Internet address changes, users will be redirected to its new address. A publisher submits a DOI to a centrally-managed directory and then use the address of that directory plus the DOI instead of a regular Internet address. The DOI system was conceived by the Association of American Publishers in partnership with the Corporation for National Research Initiatives, and is now administered by the International DOI Foundation. Essentially, the DOI system is a scheme for Web page redirection by a central manager.
