How do I print/copy?

To use the printing and photocopying facilities:

  • Your Student ID Card needs to be activated for copying and printing. This will normally occur when your Student ID Card is issued to you.
  • You will need to load money into your copying and printing account on the University network – this can be done at one of the Card Cashier machines in the Main Library, Computer Labs 13&14, or the Reloader in the Law Library and the Multimedia Learning Centre. Alternatively, you can use the EFTPOS machine in the Main Library to transfer money directly from a debit/credit card account.
  • The first time you use a copier or printer you will need to choose and confirm a PIN to use in conjunction with your Student ID card for all copying and printing.
  • All photocopying and printing is self-service with card readers attached to the printers and photocopiers.
  • Swipe your Student ID Card through the card reader before copying or releasing a print job. The amount of money available in your copying and printing account will be displayed.  As photocopies or prints are made, the programmed price will be debited to your account and the amount available will decrease accordingly.
  • Printing facilities are unavailable for Alumni, Associate Borrowers and members of the community.

What about Copyright?

Please note that copying must not infringe provisions of the Copyright Act 1968. The relevant restrictions are displayed prominently on each copying and printing machine. For further details on copyright please refer to the Copyright web pages.

A copyright owner is entitled to take legal action against a person who infringes his copyright. Unless otherwise permitted by the Copyright Act 1968, unauthorized copying of a work in which copyright subsists may infringe the copyright in that work. Where making a copy of a work is a fair dealing under Section 40 of the Copyright Act 1968, making that copy is not an infringement of the copyright in the work. It is fair dealing to make a copy, for the purposes of research or study, of one or more articles on the same subject matter in a periodical publication, or, in the case of any other work, of a reasonable portion of a work. In the case of a published work that is less than 10 pages and is not an artistic work, 10% of the total number of pages, or one chapter, is a reasonable portion.

Which way do I swipe my card at copiers and printers?
Swipe the card in any direction with the magnetic stripe down and facing the back (i.e. facing away from you)

What do I do if I have forgotten my PIN?
You can ask staff at the Loans or Information Desk in the Main Library who can reset your PIN on the Administration workstation in the Copying & Printing room. You will then need to enter and confirm a new PIN the next time you use a copier or printer.

What do I do if the system says my card is “locked?”
This occurs if you are currently using a copier or printer and then try to use your card at another copier or printer or card cashier at the same time. It also occurs if you repeatedly enter an incorrect PIN. You can speak to staff at the Loans or Information Desk in the Main Library who can unlock your card on the Administration workstation in the Copying & Printing room and, if necessary, reset your PIN.

What do I do if there was a paper jam and I was charged for a print or copy that I could not get? Speak to the staff at the Loans or Information Desk in the Library. They will verify what the problem is and if applicable, complete a form to have the relevant amount credited back to your copying and printing account. No money refunds are given.

What do I do if the magnetic stripe on my Student ID Card is damaged or my card will not work after initialising it?
Take your Student ID Card to Academic Services who will examine it. If the card has been damaged, you will need to pay for a replacement card. If there is no obvious damage to the mag stripe then Academic Services will run it through the machine to reset the stripe. If the card still does not work it means that it has been affected by placing near a strong magnetic source or placing against the mag stripe of other cards. You will need to pay for a replacement Student ID Card.
