Grouping References in a Library

To set up a new group, make sure that the Groups pane is showing at the left of the library window. If not, use the Show/Hide Groups icon on the Main toolbar to display the Groups pane. Click on References on the menu bar then select Groups > Create New Group. A box with New Group will appear in the Groups pane at the left of the library window. Delete the text New Group and type a name for the group. Click on All References at the top of the Groups pane to display all references in the main pane.

When searching or browsing the library, you can transfer references to a group by drag-and-drop, or by selecting the references and using a right click to select  Add references to

A group is just a subset of the references in the library. A particular reference may be assigned to more than one group.
Groups can be renamed and deleted. References can be deleted from a group, but they will remain in the library until deleted from the library in the normal manner.

The names of all the groups are listed in the Groups pane at the left of the library window. They can be opened from this pane.

The Show/Hide Groups icon on the Main toolbar allows you to display or hide the Groups pane.

Reference Fields

The Electronic Resource Number field has now been renamed DOI.
The Link to PDF field has been renamed File Attachments. As before, it can be used for linking to a PDF, Word document, spreadsheet, etc. The corresponding icon on the Main Toolbar (a paperclip) has been renamed from Open PDF to Open File. Up to 45 files can be attached to a single reference.
The Image field has been renamed Figure.

Searching the Library

In addition to the full Search function, there is now a Quick Search box on the Main Toolbar. It performs a string-search of all references in the library.

Modifying References

If you have set up modified reference types, and wish to transfer them to another machine, or to share them with other EndNote users, there is now a simple function for doing this.
Click on Edit > Preferences > Reference Types. Under Reference Type Table, you will see Export and Import buttons. Use these to export your modified reference types as an .xml file, or to import such a file.

Connection Files

When accessing connection files from the Tools menu in EndNote, the command Connect has been renamed Online Search.

Word 2007

When EndNote X1 is installed on a PC which is running Word 2007, two things happen:

  • The commands relating to Word's own Bibliography function disappear from the References tab of the ribbon
  • The EndNote commands appear as a new EndNote tab on the ribbon.

The commands on the EndNote tab look like this:

EndNote X1 tools in Word 2007

Note that the EndNote commands have been organised into three groups: Citations, Bibliography and Tools.

Some of the commands, such as Insert Citation and Convert Citations and Bibliography, have drop-down menus containing further commands.

The Find Figure command is now one of the options under Insert Citation.

The Styles Manager box appears at the top of the Bibliography group. Changing the style here will automatically reformat the document in the new style.

The basic Format Bibliography command has become Update Citations and Bibliography, but the functions for amending the formatting and layout of the bibliography, which previously formed part of that command, are now accessed by clicking on small arrow in bottom right-hand corner of the Bibliography group.

The Remove Field Codes command has become Convert to Plain Text (which means removing EndNote codes not changing font type) and is one of the options under Convert Citations and Bibliography.

The Generate Figure List command has disappeared. The Update Citations and Bibliography command now performs this function.

Word 2007 Bibliography Function

There is a new citations/bibliography function in Word 2007. This feature is similar to a basic version of EndNote, and allows the user to store references (sources) on their computer and add citations to a Word document. A bibliography can be generated in one of ten styles.

When EndNote X1 is installed, the commands relating to the Word 2007 Bibliography function disappear from the References tab of the ribbon. The expectation is that someone using EndNote will not be using the Word Bibliography function.
