NHMRC Career Development Fellowship

The NHMRC Career Development Fellowship scheme aims to:

  • help build Australia's health research skills, with a particular emphasis on clinical, public health and health service research;
  • increase knowledge and support the development of evidence based health policies;
  • encourage the growth of knowledge-based industries in Australia by helping to bridge the gap between research and industry and fostering an environment that values industry achievement; and
  • provide a vehicle for Australian researchers working overseas to return to Australia to continue their career development.

 

There are a number of different awards:

 

  • Biomedical Career Development
  • Clinical Career Development
  • Population Health Career Development
  • Industry Career Development
  • Co-funded Career Development

Eligibility:

Career Development Fellowship (CDF) Level 1:

Applicants will normally have at least 2 and less than 7 years post-doctoral experience from the date of the letter advising that their doctoral thesis was passed (at the time of the close of applications) unless exceptional circumstances exist (see exceptional circumstances below). Applicants who do not hold a PhD but can demonstrate an equivalent research qualification (eg a professional doctorate) may also be eligible to apply.

Career Development Fellowship (CDF) Level 2:

Applicants will normally have more than 7 and less than 12 years post-doctoral experience from the date of the letter advising that their doctoral thesis was passed (at the time of the close of applications) unless exceptional circumstances exist (see exceptional circumstances below). Applicants who do not hold a PhD but can demonstrate an equivalent research qualification (eg a professional doctorate) may also be eligible to apply.

Value:
There are two levels of CDFs to apply for:

•CDF Level 1 (2 to up to 7 years post-doctoral experience);
•CDF Level 2 (7 to less than 12 years post-doctoral experience)

Both levels are four year awards. In 2012 the annual payment for the first year is:

•CDF Level 1 - $97,769; and
•CDF Level 2 - $108,142.
