Application Process

BUHREC offers two types of review (application forms below):

  1. Full Review: any research involving human participants that is NOT minimal risk. This includes ANY experimental manipulation, research involving minors or special collectivities, research about sensitive or serious social conditions.
  2. Expedited Review: any research involving human participants that presents a minimal risk to participants.

The Committee has adopted the NHMRC Principles in its application form, whilst acknowledging that there are other environments in which university research is conducted and that research methodologies vary in accordance with the fields of study. They affirm fundamental rights for participants/subjects in research and provide guidance in the conduct of research. Although most research carried out by staff and students does not entail serious risks there may be some research projects where these may be present. The questions on this form are intended to assist Bond University Human Research Ethics Committee to minimise risk to everyone, including researcher(s) and participant(s).

Application Steps - Full and Expedited Review

  • Obtain a BUHREC Protocol number from the Ethics Officer.
  • Bond University staff and students applying for approval for expedited review research should complete a BUHREC Application Form (MS Word 700 K)
  • All external applicants should complete the NEAF. Please also refer to Guidelines for External Applicants.
  • Complete the application form electronically and save the file using the protocol number.
  • Completed application forms should be submitted to the Research Ethics Coordinator electronically plus one hard copy.

Failure to obtain FULL approval of a research protocol involving human participants BEFORE commencing data collection may result in disqualification of the research project or thesis. See NHMRC National Statement

Marketing or Audit Surveys

At present, staff who wish to conduct a survey of students or colleagues which is not academic research but is for marketing or audit purposes do not, in general, require ethics clearance. This might be the case, for example, if the survey is a management tool to establish or ensure that you are offering a service that meets the needs of your users, or to identify gaps in service provision. However, if you would like to take advantage of the benefits of having your survey methods and protocol reviewed by an expert panel (providing advice on best practice and improved procedures and outcomes), BUHREC will be pleased to offer that service.

As a rule of thumb, if a research publication is anticipated as a result of a survey then this would be classed as research and you must apply for ethics clearance.

If you are unsure whether your project requires ethics clearance to proceed, please feel free to discuss it with the Research Ethics Manager by email or call on 54194 from an internal line or if you are dialing from outside the University, ph. 07 5595 4194.

You will find more information online about Surveys at Bond University. (Please note that this link will not work if you are attempting to access it off campus, through a resident LAN, or wireless network).

Should you require advice on Bond University survey policy and procedures please email the University Survey Manager or call on 55543 from an internal line or if you are dialing from outside the University, ph. 07 5595 5543
