Bond’s Associate Dean of Research and Innovation in IT, Dr Michael Rees, was approached by Caradata CEO Bridget Dickson to help develop software that would allow medical clinic professionals to access patients’ sexual health information via a web-based application. Dr Michael Rees and Bridget knew that their key challenge would be guaranteeing privacy and security.
“Caradata Pty Ltd developed the Sexual Health Information Program (SHIP) software specifically for sexual health clinics to operate as a stand-alone program based on a local area network LAN,” said Dr Rees.
“The SHIP patient information management software has been widely accepted and is used extensively in almost 100 Sexual Health and Family Planning units across Australia.
“They are now finding, however, that doctors and support staff need to link to SHIP from remote locations, so Caradata asked for our help to research and develop a new webbased application, SHIPWeb, which would still guarantee patient privacy in terms of this highly sensitive information.”
Funded by a $100,000 AusIndustry R & D Start Graduate Grant, Bond School of IT graduate Paul Sifter was employed to design and implement the SHIPWeb software, which will be ready for its first pilot in early 2006.
“Working on medical software of this nature, we have been able to draw on the expertise of our experienced health professionals at the new Bond University Medical School,” said Dr Rees.
“Whilst Paul and a team from the School of IT perfect the technical aspects of the program, our on-campus medicos will provide invaluable feedback on the practicalities of program usage – whether the response times are adequate, does it provide enough information in a useable format, and so on.”
Once finalised, SHIPWeb will replace the existing LAN version of SHIP and is expected to increase the program usage.
The research team also believes that the SHIPWeb software can be adapted to a wide range of other specialised medical disciplines, such as family planning clinics.
