Urology Group
The Urology Group was established to enhance knowledge of the lower urinary tract with the aim of developing new treatments or enhancing current treatments for the following conditions: - Neurogenic and idiopathic overactive bladder
- Bladder cancer Cancers of the lower urinary tract
- Interstitial cystitis
- Benign prostatic hyperplasia
- Stress incontinence
During 2011 the Urology Group had a range of successes including: - New research project grant ($180,000) from the Cancer Council Queensland awarded to Prof Russ Chess-Williams, Dr Catherine McDermott and Dr Roselyn Rose’Myer (Griffith University) - “Cytotoxic drugs, urothelial function and the ageing bladder” (2011-2013).
- Invitations to speak at International conferences:
- Japanese Neurogenic Bladder Society (Fukui, Japan, 2011). Russ Chess-Williams gave an invited keynote lecture: “Future prospects for treatment of lower urinary tract disorders from the viewpoint of basic science” and also was an invited symposium speaker “Contractile properties of the bladder urothelium/suburothelium”
- Australian Society of Clinical & Experimental Pharmacologists & Toxicologists (ASCEPT) (Perth). Russ Chess-Williams was an invited symposium speaker “Urothelial function and potential targets for novel drug development”.
- Best Student Presentation Award to Luke Grundy at the National Symposium on Advances in Gastrointestinal and Urogenital Research.
- Current Research grants:
- National Health and Medical Research Council funding of $434,800 - Prof Russ Chess-Williams, Prof Liz Burcher (UNSW), Associate Professor Kate Moore (St George’s Hospital, Sydney), Dr Kylie Mansfield (University of Woolongong), 2009-2012 - “Non-neuronal ATP: regulation of release and action in the bladder”
- European Commission Framework 7 - Marie Curie Initial Training Networks: $5.5million - 11 European centres – Sheffield Hallam University centre 2 – Associate Professor Donna Sellers, Dr Neil McKay (Sheffield Hallam University, UK), & Prof Dave Grundy (University of Sheffield, UK), 2010-2014; “Training for Urology Scientists to develop new Treatments (TRUST)”
- Queensland Smart Futures Scholarship awarded to Christian Moro
