Research Highlights Dispute Resolution Centre banner

The Dispute Resolution Centre

The Dispute Resolution Centre (established in 1989) has had another year of activity and achievement. Based in the Faculty of Law, the Dispute Resolution Centre continues its national reputation for training, teaching, research and mediation processes.

The aims and objectives of the Centre are:

  • To promote a better understanding of the need for, dynamics of, and advantages of consensus-oriented procedures of dispute resolution.
  • To develop modules in negotiation, mediation, arbitration and other forms of alternative dispute resolution in the Law Faculty’s programs.
  • To provide training in dispute resolution methods for lawyers and other professionals involved in this field.
  • To encourage and facilitate research and publications in the different areas of dispute resolution.
  • To provide an umbrella organisation for individuals and bodies involved in this field.

During 2011 the aims and objectives of the Centre were achieved through courses, workshops and seminars presented on and off campus, as well as directed research, including:

  • Due to the success of the first on campus five day Family Mediation course in August 2010 a further two courses ran in 2011 and are proving popular. This course satisfies two goals—first it is a postgraduate course; secondly, and significantly, it satisfies the complex statutory requirements of being an Accredited Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner with the Federal Attorney General’s Department.
