Michael Jones was a senior solicitor at the North Australian Aboriginal Legal Aid Service who passed away in 2010.
Michael practised in Perth, Darwin, Broome, Melbourne, Zimbabwe and London after completing his articles of clerkship in South Australia. He led a small team of criminal defence lawyers at the North Australian Aboriginal Legal Aid Service for a number of years representing more than 2000 clients every year in the Darwin courts.
One can only imagine how dispiriting it must have been for a criminal defence lawyer to represent people sent to prison for long periods for petty crimes in the heyday of mandatory sentencing. But Michael was a man of uncommon energy, high principle and great courage. He spoke out loudly and often against mandatory sentencing, as he did whenever there was injustice in Northern Territory courts, or anywhere else he worked. That is what great criminal defence lawyers do: they speak out against injustice.
This Lecture will celebrate the important work done by criminal defence lawyers in preserving the rule of law in Australia.
