Leave of Absence(Student Visa Holder's)
To apply for a Leave of Absence you must complete a Request for Leave of Absence form (available from Faculty or Student Administration) and submit it to your Program Advisor.

Student visa holders are not permitted to remain in Australia during periods of Leave of Absence unless compelling and compassionate circumstances apply.

Where compelling and compassionate circumstances exits students must provide medical supporting documentation with your Leave of Absence form.  Permmision stay in Australia whilst on a period of Leave of Absence ultimately rests with The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) and is generally only granted due to medical circumstances that prevent you from leaving Australia.  A period of Leave of Absence may affect the status of your student visa.

Student Visa Holder's

Academic Load - Where a student visa holders proposed new enrolment is inconsistent with the National Code a student visa holder may not receive approval to change their enrolment.  The National Code, Standard 9 requires student visa holders to be enrolled with an academic load “that at all times ensures the student is in a position to complete the program within the expected duration” and “ensure that in each compulsory study period for a program, the student is studying at least one unit that is not by distance or online learning”.

Standard 9 only allows reduced academic load as the result of:

  • compassionate or compelling circumstances (for example illness or hospitalisation where a medical certificate states that the student was unable to attend classes for an extended period or where the registered provider was unable to offer a pre-requisite unit)
  • the registered provider implementing its intervention strategy for students who were at risk of not meeting satisfactory course progress; or
  • an approved deferment or suspension of study has been granted by the provider.

Student visa holders must consult with their program advisor prior to submitting the post week 2 change form to ensure their proposed enrolment load is in accordance with National Code Standard 9.

Leave of Absence or Withdrawal - In most circumstances Withdrawing from study or taking a period of Leave of Absence means that you are no longer meeting the 8202 condition of your student visa.  In order to remain complaint with the conditions of your student visa you must leave Australia.  If you are unsure about your student visa obligations we strongly recommend that you contact DIAC or a representative of the Bond International Student Team
