Ellipses

Use ellipses (three dots) for:

• Words in a quotation that have been left out. (use a space before and after the ellipses and use an extra dot if the missing words cover the end of a sentence.)
  • As Macfarlane states, “a large percentage of day to day time … is taken up with answering phone calls.”
• To signal a pause (in non-formal writing only).
  • I don’t know what to say…
