Plagiarism

Plagiarism is a serious offence and includes:

  1. Copying another student’s work.
  2. Copying or summarising another person’s work without giving them credit.
  3. Copying someone else’s ideas without giving them credit.

This website from Indiana University shows examples of the differences between acceptable and unacceptable paraphrasing and has some great tips for avoiding plagiarism.

For a free test to see if your essay possibly contains plagiarised materials click here where you can type in part of your assignment and the program will match up any parts of your essay that infringe upon any other works. This is not a foolproof test.

Remember that your lecturer or tutor will use the internet and will probably also have software which will enable them to quickly check your essay for plagiarism.

Plagiarism is not worth the penalties, which can include failing that essay or complete subject. You can also be expelled from the University.
