Repetition

To refer back to a word or phrase that has already been used, we have three basic choices: use a pronoun; repeat the exact word or phrase; or use a synonym or variation on the word or phase.

There are two important considerations to make when using pronouns: the reader must know what it is referring back to, and it must agree in number and gender to the original reference.
