Essay Layout

After Brainstorming and then grouping and deleting ideas we should be left with the core points of the essay. Now we need to decide which point seems the most relevant to discuss first and then the second point and so on. There are four ways to decide this order:

  • Order of Importance – most to least important or vice versa.
  • Chronological order – for a process or event.
  • Place order – grouping countries, areas or rooms
  • Logical order – advantages then disadvantages, cause and result.

Also put your supporting arguments and details for each point in their most logical order. This is vital to making your essay cohesive and flowing.

It is important that if a number of points, reasons or arguments are listed in the introductory paragraph, then the following paragraphs in the body of the essay must follow the same order.

Therefore if the last sentence of the introduction paragraph says, “The three most popular of these current low-carb diet fads are The Atkins, Southbeach and Hollywood diets,” then the descriptions of these diets must follow in paragraphs in this order.
